Transportation & Vehicles

If the modern world runs on commerce, then commerce itself runs on transactions involving goods and services, most of which require resources from one location to be transported to another in order to complete the exchange.  The Transportation industry makes all of this possible, whether by truck, bus, rail, plane, sea ship, or even spaceship – each relying on sophisticated control systems for their reliable, safe, on-time operation.

CHALLENGES

Safety, energy, and the environment – these three topics are increasingly intertwined with the Transportation industry, describing the immense challenges squarely facing personal, commercial, and industrial ends of the market equally.  From short-term concerns around inflated costs to long-term fears of detrimental greenhouse gas emissions, there is much work to be done in evolving our domestic logistics sector.

EXTENDED OPERATION IN AGGRESSIVE CONDITIONS

➤ Moving people and goods from place to place involves crossing long distances over extended travel times, often in inclement weather to boot.  Freight trucks and rail cars can easily put on 500 to 1,000 miles in a day, while cargo planes can log upwards of 4,000 miles per day.  These long operating periods in extreme temperature, low atmospheric pressure, and high dust and moisture conditions require the utmost in component reliability.

REMOTE, ISOLATED LOCATIONS

➤ Further to our above point on reliability, equipment in the Transportation industry must also perform safely and dependably knowing that any type of repair, maintenance, or replacement help may be days away (or longer).  Sea ships and intercountry freight trucks in particular routinely travel to locations isolated from all outside help, meaning that mechanical and electrical components must offer a unique combination of simplicity and resilience so that personnel always make it home safely.

EVOLVING SUSTAINABILITY REQUIREMENTS

It goes without saying that the Transportation industry receives the lion’s share of scrutiny related to environmental pollution, stemming from its near universal reliance on fossil fuels.  In addition, multiple other concerns around rare earth mineral consumption (in onboard electronics), contribution to traffic congestion, environmental contamination (such as recent hazardous material rail car accidents), and aging vehicle replacement volumes are all topics receiving considerable regulatory attention as they relate to modern sustainability interests.

SOLUTIONS

While we can’t solve the fossil fuel or traffic congestion concerns facing the Transportation industry, Whitman Controls can certainly do our part in supporting vehicle manufacturers, aftermarket OEMs, integrated system developers, and R&D centers in their incredible efforts towards delivering cutting-edge vehicle, safety, and control technologies using our catalog of reliable, simple instrumentation.

Conventional Solutions to Emergent Applications

While an application may be novel in its field, diligent engineering review often finds that a standard or semi-standard solution can be made up by piecing together conventional components – the magic being in the way these components are applied and configured. Our experienced engineers can help break down complex, emergent projects to help you navigate options between standard and custom instruments.

ISO Quality Control

Our product quality may speak for itself, but how can we assure this before you put our instruments into use? Whitman Controls is an ISO 9001 Certified business, providing you with the assurance that our products are entirely designed, manufactured, tested, and delivered using third-party verified practices, complete with total process documentation, material traceability, and chain of custody control.

Extensive Application Engineering Support

Whenever you face a new application, unique challenge, difficult design constraint, or other technical concern, Whitman's application engineers stand ready to support you with their broad experience and honed expertise across nearly all industries. Our ability to troubleshoot and resolve application challenges is a testament to our dedication to our customer’s success long after their purchase is complete.

Full Product Customization and Value-Add

Our predefined product catalog of hundreds of instruments is only the tip of the iceberg here at Whitman Controls. We can fully customize virtually any of our product models to your exact needs. We're especially excited about emergent applications and highly technical challenges, and can help you with one-off R&D samples as well as high volume production runs of your World's First instrument design, plus custom wiring harnesses, adaptors, and kits.

PRODUCTS

Whitman Controls offers multiple instrument, switch, and transmitter models that are engineered to match the demands of the Transportation Industry, such as these below related products.

p90 Pressure Switch

P90 Off Road NEMA 6 Pressure Switch

The P90 Severe Environment Pressure switches are built to operate in harsh conditions and are typically used in vehicle applications both off road and on. As these switches are NEMA 6 rated, they are weather proof and briefly submersible. Ideal use is on log skidders, tractors, handi-vans, cranes and numerous other applications where shock, vibration and weather are of primary concern.

L96 Capacitance Level Transmitter

The L96 Capacitance Level Transmitter is an advanced, highly customizable device for liquid level measurement and control in various tanks and other enclosures. The probe can be custom-designed to meet the unique needs of the end-user and application, and the device can be calibrated by the user to provide both continuous level data and switching functionality.

The L96 comes with a configurable analog output as well as a relay output for users in need of a level transmitter and level switch all-in-one solution. The devices also have an optional OLED display for applications where visual calibration and monitoring is necessary.

P95 Off Road NEMA 6 Pressure Switch

The P95 Severe Environment Pressure switches are built to operate in harsh conditions and are typically used in vehicle applications both off road and on. As these switches are NEMA 6 rated, they are weather proof and briefly submersible. Resiliency in high pressure conditions is the key differentiator relative to its P90 sister switch, with the ability to withstand hydraulic spikes to 4,000 psig.

TP Series Economical Stainless Steel Temperature Probe Switch

TP Series Economical Stainless Steel Temperature Switch

The Whitman Controls TP Series Economical Stainless Steel Temperature Probe Switches are a creep action thermostat/thermal protector switch providing almost no differential between opening and closing temperatures. The switch is designed for use from 50˚F to 250˚F in 25˚F increments with a +/-5˚F tolerance. Special temperature ranges and configurations are available for OEM customers. The probe length is .625″ standard, but lengths from 0.0″ to 3″ (or longer) can be offered on a custom basis. These switches are available wired Normally Closed or Normally Open on increasing temperature.

L10 Vertical Brass/Buna Temperature-Level Switch

The L10 Series Vertical Mount Brass Buna Temperature-Level Switches are highly versatile, providing the end-user the ability to control both temperature and liquid level within an application. The buna float can be used in numerous liquids and can survive up to 230℉ in oil. The internal thermostats are available from 100℉ to 225℉ in 25℉ increments, with special temperatures available for O.E.M. customers.
